Antoine Mountain
Antoine Mountain is Dene, originally from Rádeyı̨lı̨kóé (Fort Good Hope). Born on the Land near Dugha Indın, a favoured spring hunting area, Antoine's artwork is grounded in his abiding love for the Land, his people, and Dene ways of life.
Antoine's style blends Dene traditions with European Impressionism, using acrylic on canvas to explore Land, snow, water, and the shifting northern light. Each piece holds a deep connection to place and story, while also preserving memory, language, and Indigenous knowledge.
In addition to being a painter, Antoine is an author. His bestselling memoir, From Bear Rock Mountain: The Life and Times of a Dene Residential School Survivor, traces the twelve years he was institutionalized at Immaculate Conception in Akłarvik (Aklavik), Grollier Hall in Inuuvik (Inuvik), and Grandin College in Tthebacha (Fort Smith), as well as his path to healing.
Antoine's academic accolades include a bachelor of fine arts from the Ontario College of Arts and Design University, a master's of environmental studies from York University, and a PhD in Indigenous studies from Trent University.
