Michelle Gruben

Michelle Gruben is Inuvialuit, originally from Tuqtuuyaqtuuq. Her parents are Roger and Winnie Gruben. Michelle has lived in Akłarvik for 30 years with her common-law partner, Danny Gordon Jr.

Michelle is an intergenerational Survivor--both of her parents were taken to residential school--and Survivor of residential school. She attended Grollier Hall for five years, starting when she was 14, in the early 1990s.

Michelle's Nanuk (grandmother) and Auntie were both talented and prolific bakers. She has fond memories of sitting at the tabel with them while they measured out ingredients and kneaded dough. Whenever she was able to get home to Tuk from Grollier, she would bake for her Daduk (grandfather) and Dad. Their favourites were raisin pies and mincemeat pies from scratch.

When she's not in the kitchen, Michelle enjoys spending time out on the Land and listening to stories from Elders in the region. Every summer she travels with her family from Akłarvik to Tapqaq (Shingle Point) on the Arctic Coast to harvest fish, caribou, and berries.
